The moment for the right cigar is FDR lighting up a stogie while planning how to rend America away from the chaos of the Depression in a dustbowl-plagued America of the 1930’s and 40’s.

The right moment for the right cigar is Winston Churchill working all hours of the day and night in his underground command headquarters in the London of the blitz.

The right moment for the right cigar is a soldier, a man or woman, who has just walked the gauntlet through a landmine in the field of battle and lived to tell the tale.

The right moment for the right cigar is a different kind of battle, when a producer has a hit after corralling writers, directors, actors and musicians, all of whom have lived their lives in artistic uncertainty, and now because of him, they have a secure future.

The right moment for the right cigar is the end of a championship game of billiards or poker. It’s also the end of a championship game of football, or baseball, or soccer, or basketball…and your side has just won.

The right moment for the right cigar is a revolution of any kind, whether you caused it, fought in it, or just escaped from it.

The right moment for the right cigar is when you realize the difference between pleasure and hedonism, and the difference between desire and necessity.

The right moment for the right cigar is when a lawsuit is over and you just won.

How to Smoke Cigars Properly

The idea of someone writing on how to smoke cigars properly may at first look funny, perhaps even ridiculous. But one comes to discover the importance of information like this when they find themselves in a situation where they really need it, and where they can’t quite find it. Assume for a moment, that you are a regular smoker. You smoke cigarettes. But you are soon going to a social event that is likely to be dominated by people who smoke cigars. You are almost certain that you will be offered one. And you don’t want to look uncultured, by saying that you don’t know how to smoke a cigar. In a situation like that, who would fault you for getting onto the Internet and trying to find out how to smoke cigars correctly?

Thankfully, as long as you are already well grounded in the basic ‘art’ of smoking, making proper use of cigars should not be too much a problem to you. Of course, if you are completely new to the whole ‘art’ of smoking, then making proper use of a ‘cigar’ can be something of a great challenge to you. One would even doubt the morality of teaching you ‘how to smoke’ seeing that you are ‘untainted by smoke’ as it were.

Ultimately, before you can start thinking in terms of how to smoke cigars correctly, you will need to understand that the typical cigar is made of two components: the wrapper and the filler. The wrapper is the paper-like utility that the ‘world out there’ sees as the cigar, whereas the filler is the material with which you wrap with that filler, the processed tobacco leaves that make up the cigar. In many cases, the wrappers too tend to be made from highly processed tobacco leaves, so that the whole cigar turns out to be 100% tobacco. It helps to know that wrapper and filler variety you use goes a long way in determining the flavor of the cigar you ultimately end up with. It would help you to research a bit, and understand the various types of wrappers and fillers available. That way, when you are asked to state your preference, you won’t end up showing ignorance and embarrassing yourself.

Of course, you will also need a lighter; when you are thinking of smoking a cigar – unless you know how you can somehow produce fire by friction! It does your image no favors to be seen lighting your precious cigar with a matchstick.

You will need to wrap the filler material (using the provided wrapper) to make up the cigar. This wrapping is quite a fine art, but you will be forgiven if you are not perfect at it, as many other people aren’t. There is also a chance that someone will have done this for you; so that you will find a cigar that is already wrapped and ready for smoking.

The smoking bit starts with your cutting the cigar. The idea here is to remove the ‘cap’ that adorns the rounded end of the cigar, to prepare it for smoking. Of course, not all cigars come with these caps – but if you encounter one, and you attempt to smoke it without cutting it, you will announcing to all and sundry that you are obviously uncultured.

Having cut the cigar, the next step will be to light it up. You should exhibit some hubris when doing this. It is one of the pleasure points, as far as cigar smoking goes.

When you get to the actual smoking, all you will have to do is to draw smoke with reasonable force, from the cigar onto your mouth. If you are new to the art of smoking altogether, it helps if practice moderation here. If you draw too much smoke, you will end up choking and embarrassing yourself. You need to draw the smoke with poise – just the same way you would watch your pace when eating at a table.

Once you have the smoke inside your mouth, it is up to you to decide what to do with it. But at the very least, let it stay there for a while, before letting it out. In the meantime, you could decide to swirl it inside the mouth, or simply to let it rest for a while, before allowing it out. You could even decide to pull it into the lungs, but you have to ensure that what you are holding, when attempting to do this, is one of the smaller cigars – and that you know how to do it correctly. Otherwise you could end up making a bad spectacle of yourself.

So, that is about all there is to the smoking of cigars.

Step 3: Fermenting After being treated, the leaves are separated by color and size. Then, about 10 to 15 leaves are tightly tied in bundles, called hands, and are kept inside boxes, known as hogsheads.

Step 4: Stripping On this stage, the filler leaves are stripped of their chief vein. This procedure is done either manually or mechanically. Then the stripped tobacco leaves are made into bundles and stocked for additional fermentation. Immediately, previous to the leaves are all set for cigar making, they undergo steaming process, so that the lost humidity is restored.

Step 5: Hand rolling Premium quality cigars are hand rolled. Rolling is really a difficult art, which can only be performed by skilled and experienced labors. The packing of filler needs to be even so that it smoothly burns.

Step 6: Wrapping Wrapping is another difficult step, in which a partly finished cigar is detached from the cast, laid on the binder leaf and then it’s cut by the use of an unique rounded knife known as a chaveta.

Although the word’s premium cigars are still made by the Cubans, cigar production has developed into an art, which has spread throughout the globe.

Hunting and Survival: Some Tips For Beginners

Hunting is as old as humanity-older, in fact-and as new as the latest high-tech gear they’re selling at your local sporting goods store. Fossil evidence indicates that early humans were hunting with spears as long as 16,200 years ago, and scientists estimate that we’ve been eating meat much longer than that-for nearly two million years, a span of time that long predates the emergence of homo sapiens.

And in that time we haven’t merely hunted animals-we’ve made the experience of hunting part of the myths, rituals and arts of human culture. The cave painters, who are humanity’s first known visual artists-and still among its best-seem to have made hunting one of their major themes; there are images tens of thousands of years old that seem to depict animals wounded in a hunt, and some speculate that the reason for the overall predominance of animal imagery in those paintings reflects their origin in some sort of pre-hunt magic-an early instance, if you will, of visualization.

Agriculture, and animal husbandry, reduced the importance of the hunt slightly, but it’s remained a part of human life. Its decreased necessity, in farming societies, allowed it to become a social outlet, even a sport, for those who could afford the time-which, for much of European history, was not many people, given the brutal laws that affected laborers’ ability to sell their work for a greater-than-subsistence wage. Hunting became a pastime for the idle rich, one that was thought to build character. In the Europe of medieval and later times, hunting grew to be so firmly associated with the upper classes that the rich hunter became a sort of stereotypical figure-one that survives to our own day in the cartoon character Elmer Fudd, that befuddled but well-off would-be wabbit hunter of Looney Tunes fame.

In nineteenth-century America, by contrast, the slaves and poor whites of the South insisted, in practice, on their right to hunt for food (often from sheer necessity). Hunting thus became, for Americans, a more democratic pastime. The Second Amendment, and the resultant tradition of American gun ownership (not to say worship), helped reinforce this idea. So did such iconic American figures as the writer Ernest Hemingway, who returned to the subject in one short story after another, and the president Theodore Roosevelt, whose obsession with “virility” (as he defined it) drove him to a near-worship of sports. So as well did the practical importance of hunting to the settlers of the West and Middle West-who carried on from thousands of years of Native American hunting of the same territory, though generally without the ecological sensitivity and local intelligence of those peoples. (Thus the near-extinction of the Bison.)

These days, hunting faces some controversy, as animal-rights activists call the sport barbaric, and environmentalists worry that its ecological consequences may be dire. Yet conservationism is also woven into the history of American hunting-Roosevelt, that pivotal figure in its history, was also among the first Presidents to enact environmental-protection laws, and his legacy lives on among hunters who support efforts to protect certain wildlife habitats. In any case, hunting remains one of the few activities that allows contemporary urbanized Americans, the vast majority of whom live in cities and towns, to interact with animals and to see forests.

But for this very reason, hunting imposes certain dangers-after all, it asks people who may have little experience of surviving in the woods to do so, perhaps miles from familiar civilization. Here are some tips to keep in mind on your hunting trip:

1) Remember the “rule of three.” In general, humans cannot survive three hours in extreme low temperatures; three days without water; or three weeks without food.

2) Always bring a first-aid kit.

3) Make sure someone knows exactly where you plan to hunt, and exactly when to expect you back. If you get trapped in the woods, you want to know there’s somebody back home who can alert authorities in the event of your going missing. Hunt in a group, if possible.

4) Observe basic gun safety at all times, no matter how experienced you consider yourself to be. Don’t point a gun or bow at anything you aren’t sure you want to shoot. Don’t rest the muzzle against your foot, keep the safety on and the trigger untouched until the moment you’re ready to fire. Unload or unstring your weapon when it’s not in use, and keep it safely locked up. Wear hearing and eye protection, leave the beers at home, and in general, always treat your gun or bow as if it were loaded and ready to shoot-always.

5) Don’t hunt during periods of low visibility-children have been shot at a range of seventeen yards by hunters who forgot this bit of common-sense advice.

6) Wear bright-orange gear to ensure your own visibility to other hunters. If other hunters in the area seem to behave recklessly-an increasing problem as methamphetamine usage takes more and more of a toll on the same rural areas that provide many with hunting grounds-get out and get home, as fast as you can.

7) Spot-check your gear before you leave, especially if it has been in contact with the ground. Otherwise you may bring home unwanted “guests” in the form of scorpions, snakes, bugs and other undesirables.

8) This is not a complete guide. Your library or local DNR office will have information you need-make sure you avail yourself of all of it.

9) A good hunter is not one who laughs at danger or never feels fear, but the one who takes danger seriously and fears the right things.

Curing and Fermentation Make for Premium Cigars

Fine tobacco is the heart of premium cigars. Try a premium cigar like a Fonseca Vintage Lonsdale Tubo and taste the world’s finest-quality cigar tobacco. The wonderful flavor and aroma of a great cigar will make you appreciate all the work that went into its creation, and work it is!

First, high-grade cigar tobacco leaves are harvested and aged using a process that combines the use of heat and shade to reduce sugar and water content without causing the large leaves to rot. This first part of the process, called “curing,” takes 25 to 45 days and varies substantially, depending on climate and storage conditions for the harvested tobacco. The curing process is manipulated based upon the type of tobacco and the desired leaf color. The second part of the process, called “fermentation,” is designed to help the leaf die slowly. Temperature and humidity are controlled to ensure that the leaf continues to ferment without rotting or disintegrating. This is where the flavor, burning and aroma characteristics are finessed.

After the tobacco leaves are properly aged, they are sorted for use as filler or wrapper, depending on their appearance and quality. During this process, the leaves are continually moistened and handled carefully to ensure its best use. The leaf will go through a continuous cycle of baling and inspection throughout its aging process. When the leaf has matured according to the manufacturer’s specifications, it will be used in the production of a cigar.

Fine-quality cigars are still handmade. An experienced cigar-roller can produce hundreds of very good, nearly identical, cigars per day. The rollers keep the tobacco moist–especially the wrapper–and use specially designed crescent-shaped knives, called chavetas, to form the filler and wrapper leaves quickly and accurately. Once rolled, the cigars are stored in wooden forms as they dry, in which their uncapped ends are cut to a uniform size. From this stage, the cigar is a complete product that can be “laid down” and aged for decades if kept as close to 70°F (21°C) and 70% relative humidity, as the environment will allow.

Once cigars have been purchased, proper storage is usually accomplished by keeping the cigars in a specialized box, or humidor, where conditions can be carefully controlled for long periods of time. Even if a cigar becomes dry, it can be successfully re-humidified as long as it has not been handled carelessly.

Premium-brand cigars are made with different varieties of tobacco for the filler and the wrapper. “Long-filler cigars” are a far higher quality of cigar, using long leaves throughout. These cigars also use a third variety of tobacco leaf, a “binder,” between the filler and the outer wrapper. This permits the makers to use more delicate and attractive leaves as a wrapper. These high-quality cigars almost always blend varieties of tobacco. Even Cuban long-filler cigars will combine tobaccos from different parts of the island to encompass several different flavors.

It happens to the biggest premium cigar aficionados out there: things start to get a little stale.

Not “stale” in the sense of dried-out. That can happen, of course, but it’s not likely to, if your humidor is set at the standard sixty-seven to seventy-four percent relative humidity range, and as long as the air temperature inside the box is between sixty-nine and seventy-four degrees. (It is, isn’t it?) No, this kind of stale has more to do with you than it does with the cigar. You feel like your premium cigar habit is in a bit of a rut, and you think it’s time to try something new.

Luckily, cigars come in all sorts of shapes, sizes and tastes, so if you’ve had enough of sweetish, almost-chocolaty oscuros you can move to the other end of the taste/color scale and try the pale-khaki-colored, dry, delightfully astringent tastes you’ll find there. If you’ve gotten into the habit of smoking long cigars that usually take around the same amount of time, every time, switch it up with some panatelas or cigarillos. If you’re in bad enough rut, it might even be time to make your own premium cigar sampler, going out of your way to pick cigars that don’t fit your usual taste profile.

But as above, so below: the premium cigar industry itself occasionally finds itself in the same sort of predicament. The standard shapes, sizes and tastes are already hitting their popularity plateau, and no one’s sure what the next breakthrough possibility is. At these times, makers of premium cigars often turn to one of the most reliable sources of business and cultural innovation: the past.

In the 1990s, when the premium cigar industry rebounded from a case of terminal stagnancy and even became, for the moment, somewhat trendy (while inspiring something of a late-1990s backlash as well), such a turn to the past for new ideas happened with the chocolaty, oily oscuro cigar mentioned above. These dark cigars occupy one extreme of the taste-color continuum–the informal rule by which light-colored, tan cigars are the driest and bitterest (features for which cigar aficionados prize them, as bitter hops make certain beers a once-in-a-lifetime experience), while, as cigar wrappers darken, the taste contained inside tends to get sweeter. The oscuro is like the bottom key on a piano, the lowest bass note on a guitar. It denotes how sweet and how dark a cigar can get.

But by the time of the so-called early 1990s “cigar boom,” oscuros were unpopular and very hard to find. This probably has more to do with an overall contraction in the market than with the oscuro itself, a kind of cigar that can be delightfully well-made as any other. With fewer people overall smoking cigars, flavors that had always been acquired tastes even among cigar fans were less likely to sell, and premium cigar makers stopped rolling them.
By the mid-1990s, though, you could find oscuros again–just as you can today, with the premium cigar industry continuing to function at a level far exceeding that of its 1991 state.

More recently, another nearly-extinct species of cigar has been recreated and is in the midst of repopulating cigar shops and online stores near you. The Salomon–a big cigar that comes in between perfectos and diademas in terms of its size–is tapered at both ends, and has always been popular in Cuba. Its unusual shape means that premium cigar makers have a difficult time finding rollers with the requisite talent and experience to make Salomons. But that hasn’t stopped La Flor Dominicana and Rocky Patel from adding new Salomon-sized models to their premium cigar lines–or from making quite an impression on taste-panelists and Cigar Aficionado (and other industry) reviewers alike.
